Subject: The impact of security duties on workloads: your help with a short research questionnaire

Dear all,

We are in the final stages of research project on how various security duties affect workloads, and have obtained the kind permission of the Pelaut list owner, Captain Makmur, to ask for your assistance.

As you know, new duties for crew have been added over the last decade-- most notably those associated with the ISPS measures that came into force in 2004, as well as additional tasks associated with anti-piracy measures (such as BMP4) in vessels operating in risky waters. Our study examines the extent and impacts of these security duties, and their interaction with overall crew workloads and with manning levels. We hope our research will help contribute to understanding and bettering the work life of seafarers and, in the long run, to improve the functioning of the maritime system as a whole.

We have already put together a solid overall picture, and would like to ask for some minutes of your time by answering a short web questionnaire at the link below, which will help us further understand how long various tasks take, who typically does them, and how this differs for different crew positions, vessel types, and security levels.

Please browse the survey link here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Security_and_workloads

Any information you provide will remain strictly confidential—only the research team will have access to it, and any other use will come out in anonymous summary form. (If you would your comments that might be used to be cited by name, this is possible, of course.) You can also use the same web link to request to receive the findings of our research when these are released.

For any questions, please contact Marcus Hallside at: spg@innovativecompliance.com

Thank you!

Hello,

I am an academic researcher working together with Marcus Hallside, CEO of Innovative Compliance on the very final stages of a research project looking at how various security duties affect workloads on EU-flagged vessels.

I am sure there is not need to tell you about the ups and downs of this issue: the concerns before and after ISPS came into effect on how much these these news tasks added to workloads, and more recent concerns about the workloads associated with anti-piracy duties.

We have already put together a solid overall picture, and I would very much appreciate your permission to email the group with a link to a short survey that helps us with some final questions on how long various ISPS and BMP4 tasks take, which crew members typically perform these, and what variation there might be between kinds of vessel (tanker, container, cargo, Ro-Ro, cruise, etc.). It is a simple email explaining the importance of the research and a link that can be followed by those who can give the 5-10 minutes to complete the survey form.

Thanking you in advance,

Y. Garb
